Physics Safety Training

The most important responsibilities of every member of the science community is to conduct research responsibly and safely. Safety should be the cornerstone on which research protocols and researcher behavior is built. Each person, student, faculty, or staff member is responsible for anticipating how their research can be conducted in a way that protects their own health and the safety of others. The safety training we provide at the start of each academic year is intended to educate and reinforce our commitment to thoughtful and safe research conduct.

Mandatory for:

  • Students taking any laboratory beyond the 100 level.
  • Students employed by the College working in any teaching or research laboratory, including lab TAs, Physics Help, and research assistants.
  • Students participating in the physics club outreach program.
  • Students interested in working in the Student Workshop.
  • Students in specific upper-level classes as specified by the instructor.

Focused on laboratory safety issues in physics

  • Physics departmental safety training is typically offered only once during the fall semester. 
  • Students who will need training anytime during a given academic year should plan ahead and complete training in the fall.
